If you're like me, you live for summer peach season. I have fond memories of growing up picking peaches in Arkansas and though we don't have close access to pick-your-own orchards near us here, they're still a seasonal must have! Finding the perfect peach at the grocery store can be difficult as they're often over or under ripe. Today I'm sharing tips for finding the perfect peach and ripening those that aren't quite ready to perfection!
CHOOSING THE PERFECT PEACH
When most look for the perfect peach, their first act is to squeeze the fruit! Don't squeeze the fruit!!! This leads to bruising and isn't the most effective method for testing ripeness. Be gentle! You can tell how hard a peach is by cradling it in your hand. In fact, a truly ripe peach can be found simply by smell! When peaches are ripe, they smell, well.... like a peach! If you can't
RIPEN HARD PEACHES
Once you get home from the grocery store with peaches that you'd like to ripen quickly, you have a couple of options. The first and most widely used is placing peaches in a single layer in a brown paper sack. Peaches put off a gas called ethylene which speeds up the ripening process. A plastic bag will do the same thing, but since plastic doesn't breath, it can lead to over-ripening if you aren't watching them carefully!
A second way, and my preferred method, is simply to place the number of peaches you would like to ripen inside of a linen towel on your counter top. The towel will work the same way as the paper bag, and by keeping them on your counter you're more likely to check on them frequently! Some peaches will ripen in as quick as a day, so make sure to check them frequently!
