This year I'm all about a cozy, rustic, minimalist style Christmas, partly due to the fact that I have a two year old, but mostly because I love the simple beauty of it! A Scandinavian, or Nordic style, Christmas is full of rustic/woodsy elements that are simplistic in design, but full of character! Today I'm sharing some of my favorite Scandinavian design inspiration for our home this year!
In the past I've always had an artificial tree! It is way less maintenance, reusable year after year, and quite frankly just easier in general! I've always decorated my tree with fillers and ornaments and garlands, so the base tree wasn't the primary focus. Last year, due to the fact that I had a one year old who pulled on everything, I decided not to put ornaments on the tree. I absolutely loved the natural and simple look of just a bare tree with lights! The only issue was that I wasn't in love with the perfect shape of our skinny tree! This year I'm looking for something more rustic and natural, so we're going to have our first real tree this year! I'm so excited for our trip to the tree lot to pick out the perfect tree! I want something with character, but nothing too big! My goal is to put it in a basket or box and simply decorate it with clear lights!
When it comes to wrapping presents, I love changing it up from year to year! This year to mimic our simple/rustic decor, I'm opting for simple wrapping by primarily using craft paper and twine! I'll adorn presents with greenery, pine cones, simple ornaments, and old black and white photos from over the years!
One big element of Scandinavian design is the use of candles! I'm obsessed with this DIY wreath! There is something so beautiful about a handmade wreath, especially when you add in white candles!
I bought a pair of vintage farm bells that I shared in my SUNDAY SEVEN post last week! I plan on adding to my front door wreath! I love the use of evergreen branches, but I'm equally as into a rosemary wreath! I can only imagine how wonderful it would smell everytime you opened the door!
Matt put up Christmas lights in high school as a seasonal job, so he always does an excellent job of lighting our home for Christmas. Last year I used some scrap wood I had and build these rustic/chippy trees for our yard! In addition too the wooden trees, I plan on potting rosemary and evergreen trees to stagger on our porch steps!
I absolutely love how elegant and cozy minimalist decor can be! I can't wait to get started on our holiday decor! I hope this post gave you some inspiration for your own home this year! If you decorate in a similar style, be sure to share your favorite ideas! I'd love to see them!
