Whites, Greys, and Textures : Stella's Big Girl Room Make Over

Stella's transition from crib to big girl room almost completely skipped the toddler phase as our tall girl outgrew her crib mattress before she was 18 months old. No, she's not a giant, but she only sleeps width wise on a bed, so in her toddler conversion she was constantly hanging off of the edge and banging her head into the rails. We decided that if we wanted our bed back, we needed to transition her to a bigger bed. With a neutral pallet of whites, greys, and an abundance of rich texture in mind, I've started piecing together the elements of her room!

I knew that the main anchoring feature of her room would be her new bed. Her room is rather small, so to utilize space for her to play, I wanted to find a daybed! I started my search on the internet, but all of the daybeds I could find were very modern or didn't give me that feeling I was looking for. I've always loved the spindle look of Jenny Lind beds, so my search moved in that direction pretty early on.

Our house is pretty small and in order to keep our home feeling light and airy I've chosen a neutral scheme that could be described as a cross between French country and farmhouse styles. One of the things I love most about our house is the seamless integration of a variety of antique and flea market finds I've collected over the years! I carried this style into Stella's nursery, and in keeping with the theme, I decided that I would ideally like to find an antique bed for Stella's room.

I decided to start my search at my favorite local antique store, City View Antique Mall in Dallas. I've found many pieces here over the years including these antique French grain sacks that I had turned into throw pillows a few years ago! I walked around the store with the idea of finding a bed in mind, so much so that my intense focus must have shown on my face! One of the sweet women working that day noticed my focus and asked what I was looking for. As we spoke and I told her what I was looking for, she mentioned that she had an antique Jenny Lind daybed in her storage that she wasn't using if I'd like to see photos! Talk about fate! I never expected that she would send me photos of EXACTLY what I wanted and needed for Stella's room!

The antique bed had been stripped to its natural state which is the most beautiful raw shades! Originally I thought I would paint the bed with chalk paint, but after seeing its color and texture in person I quickly decided against that plan! Instead, I would simply seal the wood with a matte clear wax to prevent Stella from getting splinters as she runs her hands across the spindles.

The next step was to find bedding for her room. There is nothing I love more than simple white bedding with layers of texture! I started with simple white sheets and a white quilt! I actually found a couple of years ago that you can find the most affordable quilts at Stein Mart! I purchased Stella's white Middleton Quilt for only $20!!! To add to the base, I wanted to find layers of texture. Stella still doesn't sleep under the covers, but she loves to snuggle with blankets. I was so lucky to stumble across this Stone Washed Raw Edge Ruffled throw that I knew would be perfect for her room!

Stella's nursery bedding all came from Restoration Hardware Baby which is my go to for neutral/ textured bedding! They have SO many rich texture options! Their organic linens and ruffled voile collections are my favorite!! I bought her a toddler size pinwheel quilted voile quilt for to accompany her nursery bedding, which is now a perfect addition to her bedding! It is the softest quilt!

My next step is to pick the perfect pillows and shams and begin the search for the perfect wall decor and accessories! I will be basing her room around a piece from my Garden Collection that I saved for our home. I wasn't sure where it would go until now, but I'm so happy that I saved it! It is the perfect piece for her room now!

I'll continue to share my progress as I work towards finishing her room! For now, I'm linking some of my favorite products, and similar finds in case you're on the hunt for the perfect whites, greys, and textures for your home, too!!

xoxo
